Client Project: Internal: Work Submission

Well I did in fact complete my 45 second advert in it's entirety inside After Effects, a risky, foolhardy task for me to take on indeed... Yet some how it payed off :) I received quite a lot of positive feedback from fellow students on the quality level of the piece, helping reassure me that it wasn't a complete amateur disaster lol. The advert has resulted in a mixture kinetic typography and sci-fi interface elements, assets derived from live-action green-screen, motion graphics, text, particles and camera flares. I believe it efficiently display ATRG's core framework and existing achievements, while simultaneously branding them as an exciting futuristic institution with impending innovation for investors. I'm glad that my After Effects project for the year is over and am looking forward to concentrating on my camera skills, ie. interviews, cinematography and documentary for the second half of the year. Bring on the end! Here is the extended addition for my personal us...

Design Practice 3: Assignment 2: Projeted Visuals: Work Submission

Image
Originally designed to be projected on stage behind a local Nottingham Hip-Hop group. The piece is intended to be a collection of abstract visuals, which harbour no identifiable storyline, plot or characters. Basically it was meant to deviate from the conventions of the cliché' rap video, e.g. cars, girls. The Key themes are Mirrors, Death, Time, Energy and Anger. The extra two minutes at the end when the song repeats were designed in case the band performs over schedule. I used a lot of After Effects and filmed most green screen and live footage using the Canon 7D. This work was also assigned by the Nottingham design agency Urban Angle. Enjoy, Rate and please leave a comment.

Design Practice 2: Interactive Spaces: Work Submission

WWW.MEDIADOBSON.COM My main ideas and intentions that I was trying to express in the project were:   To develop a comic book themed website that gave viewers the illusion of reading an open comic book on-screen, to place as much content as possible in the constraints of comic book style boxes to reinforce the idea of reading an open comic book. Through using the themes of comic books, superheroes and hand drawn art, I was hoping to represent myself immediately as an animator, creating a contrast between the rawest form of animation ‘traditional’ and the more modern 3D computer animation in which I specialise in. To create a website which had a creative design flare and was aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but which also maintained simplistic elements in terms of an easy to use navigation, understandable language, good communication and a constant layout. Finally the main aim...

Design Practice 2: Film: Work Submission

Image
My main ideas and intentions that I was trying to express in the project were: Our main aim was to create an interpretation of the script ‘shift’ that was uniquely distinguishable from the other groups, through alteration of the visual style, time period and mise en scene. We set to incorporate our script into the ‘film noir’ style of filming, the main story which already had many conventions and tropes associated with film noir, such as conspiracy and crime, could easily be converted to match the style. To produce a film that audiences could instantly associate and relate with film noir (shadows, high contrast, city scenery, detectives), but at the same time not be restricted and have a unique postmodern twist. For example mixing black and white with modern scenery, old props alongside modern items and the use of electronic music creates an interesting hybrid film. The idea that it has 1920’ film noir elements but is set in 21th century Britain let’s audiences experience mixtures the...

Design Practice 2: Animation: Work Submission

Image
My main ideas and intentions that I was trying to express in the project were: To collect and portray a direct vision of visual styles, moods and personal interests that were inspirational to me in the past and present and reflect them into a current project. For the audience to reflect on my work and be able to find similarity’s to conventions of the horror genre, specifically through sound, lighting, props and overall mise en scene. For audiences to be drawn into a realistic environment and experience a consistently interesting journey, I wanted the viewer to feel almost mesmerized by the travelling motion of the 1st person perspective, picking up on fine details along the way. Creating a genuine 1st person perspective that would mimic that of a real life theme park ride, using camera movements to replicate emotions such as being shocked and then jumping backwards. Using the camera as tool to explore the different possibilities of a 3D world through experimentation with angles, rath...

Design Practice 1: Interactive Spaces: Work Submission

Image
Last Monday i completed my design practice one module: interactive spaces, as i explained in my last blog post a simple task became a complex one with lack of research, using notepad instead of dreamweaver increased complexity ten fold, although now everything is completed I am very satisfied with what I have produced. After finally importing all my notepad files into dreamweaver I began to link the pages with boarders, the process was quite complex as I had alot of nodes that branched of to different options, If a user collected a certain object the interface of the image changed as there was a new item in the your inventory. So in entirety i had to produce a lot more photo shopped images than normal to indicate a person has an item in there inventory. I defiantly learnt that planning is crucial when it come to interactive spaces, the simplest things like using front slashes instead of backslashes can cause problems. I also understand the aspect of journey better, this was the first t...

Design Practice 1: One Shot Film: Work Submission

Here is my 'Design Practice 1: One Shot Film' final group edit submission, I am very pleased with the outcome, It could almost be an advertisement for child abuse, I almost cryed (joke). There is always the possibility for my own individual edit in the future. Here it is in all It's glory: One-shot film chalk emotions from Samuel Dobson on Vimeo .

I have produced and rendered two stations idents, one with sound and one without. The one with sound may need some minor tweaking and I believe the quality is reduced because access to adobe premier, to add the foley was unavailable . There isn't much to discuss at this stage until I am requested or decide to refine and alter, I doubt major changes will be necessary to the shapes and models, more likely the colours, formats and camera angles will be an issue. Here they are, in all their glory:
